2.6.2001 Following the suicide bomber blowing himself up at the Dolfinarium - putting down in writing the platform of the movement Fence for Life
15.7.2001 Founding meeting held in Hod Hasharon for the movement “Fence for Life.” Prof. Dan Shivtan lectured on the need for a barrier, with about 100 people present. During the meeting, Adv. Ilan Tsion, movement founder, called for all to get out on the streets and protest in all legal ways possible, protest to demand that the government immediately build a continuous, hermetic security fence separating the Palestinian and Israeli centers of population, on the route determined by the government, without necessarily evacuating settlements or withdrawing for building the Fence. During the meeting, the new movement's leaders described future actions: protests throughout the country; media initiatives; and letters to and meetings with prominent public figures.
20.7.2001 Fence for Life's first protest was held at the Arlosoroff Junction, Tel Aviv's Railway Station North, with about 20 activists holding signs and distributing flyers and stickers (“A Security Fence is the only way”) to drivers who passed by the junction. Drivers welcomed the protest and expressed their sympathy with the cause by honking and waving.
3.8.2001 Fence for Life held a protest at Ra'anana North Junction with about 15 activists holding signs and distributing hundreds of stickers (“A Security Fence is the Only Way”) and flyers to drivers who went by the crossroads. Drivers enthusiastically honked and waved. As drivers halted at red light, activists explained that a security fence was needed and should be built immediately, that it should be continuous, and that it should not have any link and/or any need to evacuate settlements or withdraw. Activists asked the public to demand the immediate construction of a Security Fence.
10.8.2001 The morning after the suicide bomber blew up the Sbarro restaurant in Jerusalem, Fence for Life held a memorial vigil at the site, in protest that the government has not yet build a security fence. About 20 activists sat there, with a tremendous number of radio and TV journalists from Israel and the world covering the protest vigil. The demand is for a continuous security barrier to prevent free entry of Palestinian suicide bombers getting through to Israeli population centers; activists held signs such as “Security fence or terror from the West Bank” and “Security Fence immediatly.”
17.8.2001 Fence for Life held a protest vigil with 6 activists posted at the entry to Canion Arim, the Kfar Sava mall. Hundreds of Kfar Sava residents signed a petition calling upon the government to immediately build a security fence separating Palestinian population centers from Israelis. A long line of people wishing to sign the petition stretched out far beyond the Movement's stand.
22.8.2001 Fence for Life held a large conference, its second, in the Eshkol Payis building at the Bnei Dror Junction. Held under the auspices of Lev Hasharon Regional Council, guest of honor and keynote speaker at the event was Maj.Gen. (res.) Amram Mitzna, Mayor of Haifa, who at that time has supported the movement's position that the government should build a Security Fence immediately without any connection to evacuating settlements or withdrawal. Other speakers were Prof. Dan Shivtan; Mr. Arieh Yeshuah, Lev Hasharon Regional Council Head, and Adv. Ilan Tsion, founder of Fence for Life. About 200 people attended, with media coverage, and a major TV feature the following Friday night screened on Channel 1's weekly diary. Background material and interviews were gathered during and before the conference, interviews with Adv. Ilan Tsion by the media, and a feature appeared on the Ynet internet site. Fence for Life wishes to thank Mr. Arieh Yeshuah, Lev Hasharon Regional Council Head, for providing the hall used for the meeting.
24.8.2001 Channel 1's Diary of the Week's Events screened a long feature on Fence for Life, with extensive footage filmed along the Seam Zone, an area without protection at the time of the filming. The feature closed with an interview with Minster of Defense Binyamin Ben-Eliezer in which he opposed Fence for Life's proposal
31.8.2001 Protest Performance was held opposite the PM's residence in Jerusalem, a dramatization of “This is how the Security Fence” will be built. The performance showed the placement of a cornerstone for the Fence, with activists dramatizing the hoped-for event in front of TV cameras from Israel and the world by placing a wooden barrier to symbolize the Security Fence. Another objective was to symbolize our longing to be similar to the pioneering days of the “Wall and Tower” settlements established by the early Zionists who knew how to work quickly in response to rapidly-changing demands of reality. Movement activists arrived with boards, and, with hammer and nails in hand, quickly built a symbolic fence in front of the Prime Minister's residence. Movement Chair Adv. Ilan Tsion announced through a microphone that they were conducting the “cornerstone setting” ceremony for the Security Fence and that construction of a symbolic fence was taking place. The performance was broadcast live on Galei Tzahal, and covered by many global media and broadcast all over the world. .
14.9.2001 Fence for Life protested at Ra'anana North Junction. About 10 activists held up signs and distributed hundreds of stickers - “Security Fence is the Only Way” - and gave flyers out to drivers going by the junction
28.9.2001 About 15 activists protested at the Glilot Junction, Tel Aviv, with Fence for Life people holding signs and distributing hundreds of stickers - “Security Fence is the Only Way” - and giving flyers out to drivers going by the junction.
10.10.2001 Founding meeting of the Haifa branch of the Fence for Life movement held today, with major speaker the Mayor of Haifa Amram Mitzna. He, at that time, supported the position that the security fence must be built immediately, not linked to any evacuation of settlements or withdrawal. Movement Chairman Adv. Ilan Tsion also spoke, with about 100 people present. Following the founding of the Haifa division, activities began throughout major streets and crossroads in Haifa with activists holding signs, distributing stickers, getting more people to join and bringing in the media to cover the protests.
12.10.2001 Protest held today at Ra'anana North Junction. About 15 activists held posters and distributed stickers and flyers to drivers driving by the junction, stating that a “Security Fence - The Only Way”
19.10.2001 Protest held today at Glilot Junction, Tel Aviv, in which about 15 activists waved signs and distributed hundreds of stickers and flyers stating that “A Security Fence is the Only Way” to drivers driving by the junction
26.10.2001 Protest held in Haifa by Fence for Life in Merkaz Hacarmel. About 12 protesters waved signs and distributed stickers demanding “Security Fence is the Only Way” and distributed flyers to drivers going by the crossroads.
2.11.2001 Protest held today at Glilot Junction, Tel Aviv, in which about 15 activists held signs and distributed hundreds of stickers (“Security Fence - The Only Way”) and flyers to drivers going by.
8.11.2001 This morning, the Fence for Life leadership met with President Moshe Katsav at the President's Residence in Jerusalem. Many media people were also present as President Katsav spoke of his support for the establishment of a Security Fence without evacuation of settlements or withdrawal. This event, with its huge media coverage, constituted a turning point in having the idea of a “continuous security barrier” penetrate the public consciousness. The idea was conceived of by the Fence for Life Movement, in contrast to the idea of unilateral political separation. The Fence for Life movement wishes to thank President Katsav for his numerous public statements and his actions on behalf of the construction of a security fence, which have assisted the Fence for Life movement in bringing the idea of constructing a Security Fence to a national consensus.
9.11.2001 At a protest vigil at the Arlosoroff North Railway Station in Tel Aviv, about 10 Fence for Life activists held signs and distributed hundreds of stickers (“A Security Fence is the Only Way”) and flyers to passersby and drivers
22.11.2001 Heads of the Fence for Life movement met with Mr. Danny Rothschild, chairman of the Council for Peace and Security. It turned out that the two movements could not agree on a way to work together, since, as they told Fence for Life, the Council for Peace and Security supports the construction of a Security Fence only if linked to evacuation of settlements, while Fence for Life supports the Security Fence as a protective barrier without evacuating settlements to build it.
23.11.2001 At 2 simultaneous protest vigils held today by Fence for Life at Glilot Junction and at Arlosoroff (Northern Railway Station) in Tel Aviv, about 15 activists waved signs and distributed stickers (“Fence for Life is the only way”) and flyers to drivers.
30.11.2001 Fence for Life held a protest vigil today at the Ra'anana North Junction, at which 15 activists held placards and distributed hundreds of stickers stating that “Security Fence is the only way.” They also distributed flyers to drivers who went by the Junction.
12.12.2001 The Fence for Life movement has been holding a tent protest vigil for two days beginning today. Located at the Northern Railway Station, Arlosoroff Street in Tel Aviv, we have been holding a sit-down strike. Fence for Life activists left their jobs and lives for two days during the middle of the week and sat in the protest tent as a united front. Hundreds of people passing through the station entered the protest tent, and expressed their support of the establishment of the Security Fence. Many commuters who spotted the tent from buses got off the buses to come and express their support and identification with the struggle. Many told of their disappointment and despair from the unity government that was leaving Israelis fair game for butchery in city streets from Palestine suicide bombers, since it was dragging its feet and not building the fence. We also held candle-lighting ceremony for kindling the Hannuka lights in the tent, distributed hundreds of flyers and placed innumerable stickers on cars stating that “The Security Fence is the only way.” Some of the placards we waved were “The Security Fence is the only way,” “Security Fence or terror attacks from the West Bank,” “Security Fence immediately,” “Security Fence for preventing terror attacks,” “Security Fence against Palestinian 'right of return', “Security Fence is the barrier to terrorism,” “Right AND Left demand Security Fence,” “The nation demands a Security Fence,” “PM: Listen to GSS Head,” “PM: Listen to President,” “Indifferent government, Chelm-like government, join the Fence for Life.” The protest tent received wide media coverage, and the Movement would like to extend deepest thanks to all activists and those who contributed their time by staying in the protest tent, as well as to the public supporting the Fence and the Movement.
